Once removed from the civilized structures of society, humans will confide in the distinct flaw of evil that is within everyone. In William Golding's, Lord of the Flies, an abundance of English schoolboys are stranded on an island after their plane is shot down during World War II. As the pilot died in the crash, the boys are left with no adult supervision or knowledge of what to do. Ralph, Jack, Roger and Piggy are upon the boys who begin with a sense of playfulness and innocence. In the spirit of governing themselves and assigning roles, Ralph becomes chief and Jack becomes the leader of his hunters. As things begin to settle down, the fear finally sets in. Without rules enforced upon children, some may lead down a dark path, like Jack when “that opaque, mad look came into his eyes again” (Golding, Lord, 53). When Jack Merridew, leader of the hunters, paints his face with clay, it is shown how the paint can liberate the boys into savagery and act mad. The mask frees them to act in ways their parents and school teachers told them was irresponsible and wrong. Acting on the darkest impulses without the thought of repercussions and rules describes Roger when “Roger’s arm was conditioned by a civilization that knew nothing of him and was in ruins” (Golding, 62). This is shown when Roger is throwing rocks at a young one, aiming to miss. Although he is still clinging onto civilization, he is still acting on the darkest impulses, leading him further into corruption and evil. It reiterates the fact that without those proper rules society provides, an individual is likely to confide in their darkest
