One may believe that William Golding’s Lord of the Flies could be based off of the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes who believed that human nature is essentially evil and that government, laws, and rules are necessary to protect humans from lapsing into society. You then can see how the slaughters, accomplished or planned of Simon, Piggy, and Ralph In Golding’s Lord of the Flies proves that the further humans wander from society’s rule the more uncivil savage like they become.
Since the boys crash on the island the first known death was Simon. The death was the first known deaths we know about, “the sticks fell and the mouth of the new circle crunched and screamed. The beast was on its knees in the center its arms folded …show more content…
Silence above. He sounded silly to himself…Roger sharpened a stick at both ends”(Golding 190). You can infer from these words that Roger had sharpened a stick at both ends to kill Ralph. However once Ralph was to be killed they were planning on decapitating his head and placing it on the stick just like they had done with the pig. They were to put his head on one end of the stick and at the other end they were to stick it in the ground. This is pure murder and the boys have gone wild to even think of doing this to a human. In the other two murders the boys weren’t directly killing, rather they caused something to happen which eventually killed, similar to how Piggy died. In this act it was a planned direct murder. They were going to kill Ralph and take his body parts off and place them on a stick.
These examples of how people become uncivil savages when they are away from government and rules are portrayed throughout the whole book in many different ways. Perhaps this is what Golding was trying to get at. The three slaughtering’s of Simon, Piggy, and Ralph all happened as the book progressed which is exactly what Hobbes theory stated. Each murder got more gruesome as the book went on and each murder got worse as the boys kept living without laws and rules. Concluding that if a group of people are left alone with no rules or laws they will turn on each other and become bloodthirsty killing
