William Golding's Lord Of Flies: Character Analysis

“Values aren’t buses, they’re not supposed to get you anywhere. They’re supposed to define who you are.” (Crusie). In Lord of Flies by William Golding, a group of boys lands on an island in the midst of World War II, and for months, they have to survive. Everything changes when there is a rumor of a beastie on the island. During the months that they are on the island their values, priorities, and strengths will be tested. Several characters have differences in what they think the main priorities are, and the group splits. Golding details the futility of people who do not share common priorities and values and the thus cannot accomplish a unified goal. Ralph, as chief has his priorities from the first assembly and always stuck with them hoping for rescue. After blowing the conch and being selected leader he had gathered the boys for assembly to talk about the rules. Ralph was voted chief from the beginning and made his priorities of survival known. He wanted a fire and to be rescued. He stated these several times to the group trying to make them understand. Jack later on became the leader, and his priority was different. He wanted to hunt and did not care to help Ralph get rescued or anyone. He was determined to get the kill. Both of their priorities being different caused the groups to split. Jack created his own tribe at Castle Rock. Hunting was the main part there, and it quickly grew. Ralph only had the conch. He still stuck to his plan, and only had a few of the others. He was quickly left with nothing. Their priorities never working together.
