Much like in the French Revolution, “Robespierre was too controlling, and beheaded anyone who voiced their opinions that were against him, soon people were too terrified to say anything about the gov’t.” (“French Revolution Notes”). This connects to The Lord of the Flies where Jack decides decides to become a leader of his own tribe and control people with fear, “The chief [Jack] was sitting there, naked to the waist, his face blocked out in white and red. The tribe lay in a semicircle before him. The newly beaten and untied Wilfred was sniffling noisily in the background.” (Golding 163). This shows that Jack likes control, and wants to make his tribe fear him so that they never have the idea of rebellion or try to speak out about their opinions because of the fear of getting beaten. When Ralph, in The Lord of the Flies, called a meeting he said, “No. don’t laugh. That shelter might fall down if the rain come back. We’ll need those shelters then.” (Golding 80). Here Ralph tries to get the boys to realize that he assigns all these rules for their own good; Ralph complains about the need for shelters because if the rain comes they would have nowhere to sleep or to be dry. He just tries to protect their natural rights, a term first brought up by John Locke, who said, “It is done with an intention in every one the better to preserve himself, his liberty and property;” (Locke). When Locke lists those rights he says, “The better to preserve himself,” (Locke), this relates to Ralph when he lists all the rules, he just intends to protect the boys on the island; the rules are for their own good. A society needs a leader that has a sense of authority and can control but also gives freedom to the citizens for the sake of their happiness. Here Ralph is trying to be that sense of authority, he is advising the boys of the island to take responsibility for their actions and is trying to help them realize that without those rules they might die; he is taking control for the good of the
