Various philosophers and scholars throughout history have believed that mankind is ultimately evil. This conviction is shared by the author William Golding and is expressed in his novel Lord of the Flies. Golding argues that when a group of people are left alone to fend for themselves, the results will be disastrous. He also supports the theory that all institutions are inherently evil in their nature. Humans are known to naturally choose hate over love, revenge over forgiveness, and prejudice over approval. Wars will be started simply because of conflicting beliefs, even though a truce could be attained. Revenge will be sought after, despite the satisfaction of forgiveness. A majority of people will never require the justice system to take action upon them, since most people are inherently moral. Humans also have an instinct for equality. Young children disregard differences such as skin colour, disabilities, and weight as these characteristics are unimportant to them. Additionally, humans naturally offer respect towards others through acceptance and honesty. It is evident that throughout the course of history, man has consistently demonstrated that he is inherently good.
Currently, various individuals and organizations are exhibiting and proving the inherent goodness in man. From the day of birth, humans inherit a set of standards which will determine the way they behave. This collection of morals exists in every person, regardless of the environment one is raised in. A viable method of testing whether we inherit moral standards are by using babies which have not yet been shaped by their parents and the society they live in.
