William Golding once said, “The journey of life is like a man riding a bicycle. We know he got on the bicycle and started to move. We know that at some point, he will stop moving and get off. We know that if he stops moving and does not get off, that he will fall.” Golding often wrote with the purpose to counteract a specific thought to his reader. During the early 1950’s, the atomic age was occurring and war was breaking out all over the world. Goldening wanted to write a novel that would provoke the thought that people who overcome adversity in society, could live more peaceful and compassionate lives. In Lord of The Flies by William Golding, british schoolboys are stranded on an island after a dreadful plane crash. The idea behind this novel is to show the main theme of the story or “fall of man.” Within the novel, Golding uses many assets as symbols to make the reader think of the deeper meaning and to realize what would happen if the world continued this way.

The conch changes from the boys following the rules to them disregarding the conch all together. At one point, the boys are throwing stones at Ralph while he is trying to sound the conch for a meeting. Later in the novel, Roger shatters the conch into pieces.
