The now tiny city is a microcosm of the one you live in. It is that place in miniature. The same thing has happened to the boys except on a much smaller scale. Some attempt to act and contribute as they would if they were back home in society. For others they saw it as an opportunity to act however they pleased because there were no adults around. But as the boys splinter into factions, some behave peacefully and work together to maintain order and achieve common goals, while others rebel and seek only anarchy and violence. Towards the end of the book just about everyone went rogue no matter how hard they tried, their humanity seemed to have switched off. “We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind.” Isaiah 64: 6. The majority of the group tried their best to be tough and contribute on the island but in the end they all fell letting the dark side of themselves out for a joyride.
