William Faulkner Biography William Faulkner was an American author and a Nobel Prize winner. He was born in New Albany, Mississippi on September 25, 1987 and died on July 6, 1962 at 64 years old. Faulkner spent most of his life in Mississippi, but he traveled to many different places. “Faulkner’s father, Murry, drank heavily and presided over the family in a tyrannical fashion, imposing silence at the dinner table and unexpectedly skipping town for days at a time. Murry's behavior took its toll on Faulkner's mother, Maud, an independent, hardheaded woman, and his parents fought often” (Shmoop). To enlist in the Royal Air Force, he lied about several facts, changing his birthplace and surname—from Falkner to Faulkner—to appear more British” (William). When Ole Miss announced in the summer of 1919 that it would admit returning veterans—regardless of their previous educational experience—as undergraduate students, Faulkner decided (largely to fulfill his mother's wishes) to return to Oxford to take classes at the university (Shmoop). He enrolled in the University of Mississippi in 1919; he wrote for the student newspaper, the Mississippian. After 3 semesters at the University of Mississippi, he dropped
