William F. Halloran School Classroom Experience

Admittedly, my experiences in Mrs. Lanza’s classroom and William F. Halloran School impacted me both as a future educator and as a person. Observing both of Mrs. Lanza’s classes, I learned a great deal about how important it is to both listen to students and adapt to their educational needs. As seen in my daily log entries, Mrs. Lanza was extremely flexible when it came to class activities. In fact, Mrs. Lanza would alter the class schedule depending on how students were reacting. For example, she would revisit challenging materials, take a break from activities that were causing frustration, and even plan an easy class period in response to heightened student excitement. Observing this, I am now aware of just how effective being flexible can be, for it helps show students how much their teacher cares for them as well as helping to make sure that students can reach their full potential. Lanza and both of her classes also impacted me as a person. First and foremost, I gained a valuable acquaintance who has offered to keep her door, or rather e-mail inbox, open for me in case I need any advice in the future. Furthermore, it must be admitted that, going into my observation placement, I was having doubts as to whether or not I really wanted to pursue a career in teaching. However, just five short meetings later, I left Mrs. Lanza and William F. Halloran School with a more definite idea of what I want my future career to be. After seeing how comfortable Mrs. Lanza is with her students, as well as her flexibility to meet their needs, I realized that I do want to become an educator. In fact, spending time in Mrs. Lanza’s classroom helped me realize that our education system needs more teachers who are just like her—teachers who strive to use best practices and try their best to adapt to the needs of their
