The Presence of Light in Carver’s “What We Talk about When We Talk about Love” Raymond Carver is the author of “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love,” he shows us in his story how a conversation about love can sometimes make people wonder what love really is. They begin to question if they ever knew what love was. One of the characters explains how love could easily just turn into a memory. The story takes place in the kitchen one afternoon. “The sunlight filled the kitchen from the big window behind the sink (356).” There are four main characters in Carver’s short story; Mel McGinnis is a cardiologist. Mel’s wife if is Terri. Nick is the narrator of the short story and his wife is named Laura. The couple are sitting around discussing love and drinking gin. They start off by giving their idea of what love is. Mel states that true love is “nothing less than spiritual love” (356). Terri, on the other hand, sees love as a more physical thing. You would think that since these two are married, they would have the same perspective on love, but they don’t at all. She begins to reminisce on the abusive love of her ex-husband Ed. Terri says that the man she lived with before Mel loved her so much that he literally tried to kill her (356). Terri goes on and tells about the time that he drug her around the living room by her ankles. While dragging her around he kept saying, “I love you, I love you, you bitch” (356).
