William Carlos Williams wrote the quick note to his wife one morning, a 'passing gesture', and stuck it on the refrigerator before heading off to work. The note turned out to be a very short poem about 20 seconds long This Is Just To Say. It became one of his most popular creations when it was published in 1934. The subject of focus happen to be plums and yes, there's no doubting, all the ideas seem to spring from this delicious, juicy, cool fruit. Perhaps the plums were picked or bought by the person the note is aimed at; perhaps they were going to be shared?
Either way, the speaker is casual, forthright and a little guilty.

William Carlos Williams and Billy Collins are both fantastic poets, with similar structure (or lack thereof) and style of poetry. In each of the combined eight poems, they all contained little to no rhyming and followed unique structure, with little to no repetition in any stanza (the only exception being Williams’s “The Red Wheelbarrow”). Likewise, both poets typically employ the use of an upbeat and optimistic tone in their poems, though they will both switch to a more neutral tone if the situation requires (Williams’s “Spring and All” and Collins’s “Cliché”). In general, both poets write in a style free of restrictions that allows them to express themselves in any way they deem necessary.…

The content of this poem is just as significant as its form. Williams makes art historical analysis his subject. He looks over the whole poem explaining the pertinent details and compositional arrangements. This practice really highlights the flow between words and pictures. The reader can either read the poem first and then look at the painting, look at the painting and then read the poem, or even simultaneously look at the painting and read the poem.…

For the poem “This is Just to Say” by William Carlos Williams, scholars and poetic analyzers can not formulate a widely agreed upon meaning for the poem (On ‘This Is Just to Say’). Some say that the poem is an allusion to Adam and Eve, with the plums representing the forbidden fruit and the note representing an apology to God. Others simply say that the poem has no meaning, which creates a strange beauty that makes the poem so special. Some even say that the poem really isn’t a poem at all. When asked about the poem, Williams responded by saying “In the first place, it is metrically absolutely regular……

In the poem This Is Just To Say by writer William Carlos Williams, the format is succinct and does not relay much information about the true nature of the poem. However, even in short poems, significance can be found, or at least it can be formed. Poetry is a highly subjective sort of writing where what it means will vary person to person. Looking just at the line “the icebox” (Williams) tells a great deal about the setting of the poem as well as why the husband's message is pertinent information.…

“Litany,” a short poem by Billy Collins, represents Collins’ view on traditional love poetry. By taking Jacques Crickillon’s poem “You are the bread and the knife,/ the crystal goblet and the wine,” and rewriting it with a commentary regarding how it would better suit his lover, Collins is criticizing the often arbitrary-seeming phrases and flowery prose of standard romantic poetry. However, its criticism does not take away its meaning. In fact, the language Collins chooses while adapting the poem, his specific changes to the poem’s metaphors, his clever comparisons between his lover and himself, and his final acceptance of his lover’s imperfections all, in the end, offer a more realistic and personal vision of romance to the poem’s subject…

She Walks In Beauty Laced with endless compliments and adoration, Lord Byron’s poem “She Walks in Beauty” tells the story of a man admiring a woman’s beauty. While the speaker does not claim that he is in love with the nameless woman, it is evident that he is attracted to her – based on the detail in which he describes her physical beauty. The “cloudless…starry skies” and “tender light” accompanied by the undulating iambic tetrameter sets the perfect, romantic mood for the speaker to express his infatuation (2, 5). The meter indicates the innocence of his attraction and a parallel to the subject of his attraction.…

Imagism was a literary movement that began in the early 20th century. This movement has its roots in the artistic world where its main aim was to avoid the old conventions and find new ways of creativity. Poets such as Ezra Pound, H.D. and William Carlos Williams tried to create a way of expressing the imagism in painting through words in poetry. This movement as contemporary art repudiates ‘beauty’ standards, and the Romanticism of the 19th-century while it admires the quotidian, the perceptual and a new industrial and urban world. Consequently, imagism completely changed the way in which poetry was written; there was no concrete pattern to follow so that the free verse was widely used.…

William Blake’s ‘London’ and Charles Martin’s ‘Easter Sunday’ are two pieces of poetry that reflect opposing perspectives of power. ‘London’ is sharp and seminal text that has been written in order to draw the reader’s attention to the persona’s observations and encounters of the conditions of London and the communal experience of its residents. The poem is a damning condemnation of a very corrupted society dominated by the power of materialism and the hypocritical paradigm that legitimates such social injustice. The poet employs a concerned tone in order to foster sympathy for the people living in these oppressed conditions. In contrast, ‘Easter Sunday’ is a wrenching statement in sonnet form, combining political and religious despair with…
