It is important to be concise and express your meanings clearly. As George Orwell (1992) said in “Politics and the English Language”, “If it is possible to cut out a word, always cut it out”(p. 182). Thus, I chose the passages in the sentence task for revision and extension part, both of them were the analysis of love poems. One paragraph is the analysis of William Butler Yeats’ love poem, another is the analysis of Anthony Ma’s love poem (SHEN, 2016, par. 1). I hope through the revision, the analysis could be concise with fewer and shorter words but clearly conveys my meaning. Yeats expressed his strong love and admiration to the love of his life, though the unrequited love tortured him (Poetry foundation, 2016). He compared his love with other men by using the word “many” and “one” to build ethos, that his unique love to the girl was different from other pursuers. He also chose antithetical words to give a further comparison, including “false” and “true”, “beauty” and “pilgrim soul”, “your moments of glad grace” and “the sorrows of your changing face” (Yeats, 1893). The shifts in tone, from other man to the writer himself made a logical appeal by contrast the love to persuade the girl to find who is the man who truly loved you. The shifts showed that other men loved the girl for her physical appearance, while he loved her everything, including her intrinsic nature. His word choice built a man who held an unswerving and unconditional love for his girl, that I was deeply touched by his love. Additionally, Yeats used second person narrative which successfully interjected his feeling into the sentence and created a direct connection with the audience.
