William Benjamin Brogdon: My Hero

Improved Essays
My hero is William Benjamin Brogdon, born March twenty-third, 1977 in Davidson County at Lexington Memorial Hospital. He is the son of Patricia and William Brogdon and the father of two children. He is my hero because he has shown me more to the real world than anyone else has before, he has brought happiness to a world that has shown me only darkness, he is the strongest person I know, and he is my father. Although he has not always been in my life, he has been with me through support and compassion. He is what makes everything worth it. Ever since I was a baby, I remember my father taking care of me—my mother always working. That was just how life was; it also created lots of problems. While times were tight, issues arose. As she is the most supportive person I have met, she is not the topic of this essay. My father scavenged through what jobs he could find to get one that would allow him to work as well as spend time with his family. I remember being excited yet fearful for him to work because I imagined my brother and I would grow apart from our father due to him working too much. The fear of him working too much came, but we never grew apart—if anything, we grew closer. “In 2.2 million households, fathers raise their children without a mother. That's about one household in 45” (Armas 4). He and I finally finally reached a place where we did not have to hide secrets, we shared everything. The first year together apart from my mother was scary but it was peaceful for once in our lives. My brother was potty trained, started his first year of school, and began riding the bus home. It was amazing to see how much progress we had made as a family. My family has told me very little about my father’s past. I only have what knowledge has been rumored around my family. I have always heard that he has had a rough early life followed by having children and continuing the roughness. I do not believe he has ever had a break when it comes to responsibility. That has never stopped him from being there for my brother and

Who is a hero for you? Many people answer that from superheroes to a war hero because people have different views on heroes. However, heroes are for me people who think of others first before they think of themselves. The best example of heroes is Terry Fox who was a Canadian and marathoner. Even though Terry Fox had his right leg amputated at the knee because of cancer, he tried to run across Canada to raise money for people with cancer, so many Canadian admire him.…

Some people say that supporting a family is easy. While it might be easier with a spouse, an education, and a steady, well paying job. For Jolly it is the exact opposite, she is a single mother with two kids and dropped out of school when she was 15, and can’t keep her job to support her family. Virginia Euwer Wolff’s Make Lemonade shows no matter someone’s situation, they will always be there for their family. Jolly and LaVaughn can both relate to this, Jolly being able to support her family at such a young age, LaVaughn´s mom supporting her goals for the future, and LaVaughn being so supportive of Jolly and her family.…

In "Fathering in America: What's a Dad Supposed to Do?," Marie Hartwell-Walker observes that no matter the kind of family situation children are in, fathers are a critical part of their child's lives. Walker displays the majority of how men can father their children, but there is so much more to the important role of being their father in the child's lives. Many have heard that having a strong male influence is important in a young boy's life, but it's equally important for a daughter to have one as well. Throughout the essay, Walker repeatedly notes that more fathers are absent for all or significant periods of time of their child's life. This can either be because the fathers are unable to provide for them financially, are prohibited from seeing them, or because their father's relationship with their mother didn’t go well.…

Fatherlessness in America Today’s society is crawling with vast amounts of different issues and problems. One of the major issues that many people face is the lack of a father figure in the household and in life. Author Louis de Bernieres once said, “In reality the world is as full of bad mothers as it is of bad fathers, and it is not the motherless children who become delinquent but the fatherless ones” and I believe that is one hundred percent true. About one in three babies born in the United States are born to a single mother each year.…

When you're a little kid, you're a little bit of everything: Artist, Scientist, Athlete, Scholar. Sometimes it seems like growing up is a process of giving those things up, one by one. I guess we all have one thing we regret giving up; one thing we really miss - that we gave up because we were too lazy, or because we couldn't stick it out, or because we were afraid. When she was going through her transition from child to adult, my mom was like a Roman candle; burning so bright and beautiful, yet fading out at the end. She told me the story of when she had to move out of the house at nineteen years old.…
