When the narrator is six, his little brother is born. He is born with major disabilities and everyone expects him to die, even his mother. Shockingly, three months later, the little brother is still alive, and his parents decide to give him the name William Armstrong. The narrator is disappointed that his brother is disabled and cannot play sports with him. When William turns two, he learns to crawl all by himself and that was a miracle for his family. His older brother gives him the nickname “Doodle” because he can only crawl backwards, just like a doodlebug.
