This article expressed information regarding the dropout rate crisis in America. There are thousands of students who come from a minority ethnic background who are dropping out of school. McMurrey mentions in this article that the country is now looking at the child’s third grade reading level to determine how many prison beds they should have for the future. In addition, the students are not receiving help to overcome any educational obstacles. Instead, the U.S is setting them up for failure.

This research was conducted with 15,753 high school students. The investigators found a correlation between absenteeism, socioeconomic status, academic performance, and parental involvement with dropout rates. They mention that some schools have intervention programs that will help students who are falling behind in their academics. However, this help is relevant to students who attend school but it cannot help those who are absent or suspended. The Expectancy-value Theory is also emphasized this theory because it was applicable to the student’s beliefs about their own character.
Parr and Bonitz are aware of the limitations of their research. They are conscious about the strengths and limitations of their research project. The research is well developed. There were three different hypotheses and they are clearly stated. The methods and results section are organized. For instance, if the student believes that he or she are not capable of performing well on their high school classes there are possibilities that the student will dropout if they have the possibility of doing so. The researchers also indicate that the student’s socioeconomic status influences that students school performance.
The researchers stated factors that English Language Learners (ELL) were facing regarding dropping out of school. Discussions about English proficiency, family socioeconomic status, and culturally differences were analyzed in depth. Statistics were on point. There are three implications for bettering the school system. Examples were given for each section. The conclusion section was very broad. It summarized the topics that were discussed in the research analysis.
