Willa Cather’s, book O Pioneers represents a completely different way of life than traditional life is the early 1900’s . Traditionally, a man’s main job consits of hard labor and a woman’s job involves having children and focusing on home life. Although this happens to be the “norm” of the time, charcters in O Pioneers do quite the opposite. Carl Linstrum, a male character in the novel, does not come across as your “typical” 1900’s man. Another bold character, Alexandra Bergson, defies the social sterotypes widely accepted at the time of O Pioneers. For example, on page 65, Oscar tells Alexandra that “the propety of a family belongs to the men of the family, because they are held responsible and because they do the work.” However, Alexandra has been running the farm and does most of the work. Oscar just assumes she doesn’t do any work, simply because of her gender. Lou and Oscar think they have more of a right to the farm just because they are men. Treated as objects, women are often disrespectured throughout the book. For instance during the beginning of the novel, on page two , a man looks at Alexandra like she’s an object. she wasn’t equal to him. Although this happened Alexandra used her power of feminism and sent him a glare of “amazon fierceness”. The man then proceeded to feel taken advangtage of. According to Karen Offen who wrote a journel, “The Defintion of Feminism”, to be a feminst one women must “protest against male domination and be individualistic”. Alexandra did both those items and acclomplished a healthy relationship too. Unlike Marie and Frank, where the relationship was pure male dominated, Alexandra made sure she had her views and no one over powered them. She also ran her own farm, where in the time this setting was in, was purely male dominated. It was very strange and uncommon for a women to be a farmer and take charge and run her own business. Alexandra carried her feministic qualities throughout the novel. According to a biography about Willa Cather, Cather believes to be a true independent women, you have to have “fateful drive” and not rebel for your own sake but for the sake of making something bigger and better for the future.
O Pioneers had many feminsitic qualities. Carl Linstrum was not the typical male model,men treated women as if they were superior, and Alexandra made sure she didn’t live in a male dominated world.
