Will music make you smarter or more successful? Music has been inspiring and entertaining people for many years. It’s hard to say when music first began although there are some cave drawings of music.(Orford)That said could music have had helped the minds of our ancestors become smarter and help lead society to where it is today? Well no if your simply listening to music but actively playing, manipulating, creating, and studying music does have an effect on intelligence; in 2010 a survey 18.08 million Americans said they play an instrument with 49.9 million Americans in the U.S.A in 2010 only 6.9 percent of music players were truly passionate about playing music.(Statista) Aside from the people who play instruments and study music why do people believe music has an effect on success? Have you ever heard that listening to music can raise your IQ? A study called the Mozart Effect is perhaps the basis of every argument of music’s correlation to intelligence. The study showed that groups that listened to Mozart for ten minutes before a test performed better than the groups who simply sat in silence. This could be due to the fact that music “fires up your emotional, memory, and motor centers.”(Adams) the study was conducted over the span of three days with each day showing better scores than the last. Since the debunking of the Mozart Effect Study it has been shown that any music can have these beneficial effects even raise IQ. And the belief that music makes you more intelligent or successful remained. It was debunked due to the fact that any music could have this effect on a person and not just Mozart. Regardless of the study being debunked it still has valid findings onto how music can make can have cognitive effects, even if it’s now specified to pertain to all music and not just Mozart’s
