In 2011, Will Ferrell gave an acceptance speech for receiving the Mark Twain Prize Award for American Humor. The location of this speech and event took place in the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Will Ferrell’s acceptance speech is approximately ten minutes long, and his speech was a celebratory speech since he mostly thanked everyone for the award. I chose this speech because Will Ferrell is one of my favorite comedians and actors. My favorite movie that Will Ferrell starred in is Elf. Will Ferrell is a great actor, and as a speaker he has some strengths and weaknesses. One of Will Ferrell’s weakness from this speech was the delivery of his introduction, and his strengths are his nonverbal communication and use of humor.

The delivery of the beginning of the speech was poor due to the fact that, within the first few seconds of Will Ferrell accepting the award, he drops the award and it shatters to pieces on the stage. From there he starts to get nervous, and as an audience member I would question whether or not the speech will go well. Then Will Ferrell begins his speech by using vocalized fillers, and I am unsure if these were planned to use to begin his speech or if it was from his nerves from breaking the award that cause the vocalized fillers. Instead of quickly recovering from shattering the award, Will Ferrell continues to ramble about how he “vows to take very special care of it.” After many “ums,” around 2 minutes and sixteen seconds into the speech, is when Will Ferrell begins to act calm and collective and stops rambling about the destroyed award. If I were to begin delivering a speech in any of my classes, like Will Ferrell did in his acceptance speech, I am unsure if my professor would let me continue or if my speech would remain being delivered
