Whether it be government corruption or Nigerian internet scams, these tensions are present in many places around the world. However, exploitation and lies play an important role in human development as immorality can bring strength and unity among people. Will Ferguson’s novel,419, emphasizes the reality of lies and deception in society and its impact on the human experience. The lives of the characters are weaved through the thread of a single email. Using characters with different backgrounds and perspectives, Ferguson allows the reader to see pigments of light in a world of complete darkness. Hope can be found even in the depths of the most corrupt and man-made destructions.

In the midst of chaos, it is the brave action of many which helps others through hardships. In Ferguson’s novel, Henry Curtis, father of Laura, chooses to fall victim to the Nigerian scam not because of weakness in character, such as temptation and greed, but due to his morality which drives him to “save the young girl’s life” (55). Even long after losing his life’s earnings, his last attempt to contact his oppressors is by asking “What about the girl?” (150). Righteousness within the human nature is brought out during times of suffering. Similarly, when Nnamdi’s village is polluted and devastated by the developments of the oil companies, the people do not simply ignore the situation. When the company destroys the fishing life of the Niger Delta, leaving children coughing with blood and fishes clogged with crude, the villagers form bonds and alliances, coming together as a community to start an uprising. During times of anguish, people learn to work together towards a common goal in order to attain it. When Nnamdi sees Amina running from her traumatic past, he takes his chance to save her.
