The film is about Will Atenton ( David Craig) his wife Libby (Rachel Weisz) and they two daughters that lives in New York City they decided to cash in all their money and buy a big house in Connecticut. He works as a successful publisher he is never at home. He made this big decision he is going to write this book he always wanted to write. At first, they appear to be living the American dream in a county home they have first moved into. Will notices a lot of tension between the neighbors.

Will and his wife uncover information about the murders, The local police refused to help them. However, after uncovering some old things hidden attic space, they find out Peter Ward had already been released from custody as there was not enough concrete evidence that he actually killed his family. He is leaving in the half way house. A man came in extremely angry, Will told him to stay away from his family. Further research leads Will to the psychiatric hospital where Peter Ward was initially hospitalized. There will is told that he is Peter Ward and that Will Atenton is false identity he invented a mask the trauma of losing his wife and his daughters. Although he doesn't believe it the scans because to show in what he once thought was reality. After his home is deemed by the city, he is evicted but does not want to leave as whenever he is in this house he returns to his fantasy land with his long dead wife.
