“As my eyes became accustomed to the dark, I saw strewn around the living room in a rough circle the decayed bodies of a man, a woman and two children, stark white bone poking through the desiccated, leather-like covering that had once been skin.” In his book Shake Hands with the Devil, Roméo Dallaire paints a heartrending image of his involvement as a high-ranking general stationed in Rwanda during the Rwandan genocide. Vivid firsthand descriptions evoke emotions of sadness, pity, and anger from any reader and makes his work especially powerful. As activists seek to draw more attention on the pressing issue of genocide from policymakers through documentaries such as First They Killed My Father and The Act of Killings, it is paramount to bear…
Moral courage means risking you life and knowing you could go to jail for it. It means going to a war zone and fighting for your beliefs even knowing you could go to jail. After the Holocaust, the world had promised that they would “never again let anything like this happen.” In the spring of 1994, all hell broke loose as one million people died in the Rwandan Genocide. What happened to the promise to never let another genocide occur again Racism, competition of land between Hutu and Tutsi, and denying the situation in Rwanda as genocide, the killings occurred and continued for 100 long days. However, that all happened because of European colonization in Africa. Doc 1, by Gerard Prunier, states how the Belgians divided Rwanda people based on physical features.…
“A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles” (Christopher Reeve) Heroes don’t need to have superpowers like the ones you see in comics, heroes are ordinary people and they are all around you wherever you go. A hero shows signs of courage, fairness, and trustworthiness Heroes are courageous and lack fear. This shows that heroes aren’t afraid of any obstacles that may face them whether it is big or small. A good example of this is in the Odyssey, when Odysseus thrusted the stake into the big and bad Cyclops to save him and his men.…
Around eight hundred thousand people were killed during the Rwandan genocide in 1942. Paul Rusesabagina, author of An Ordinary Man, sheltered and saved the lives of over twelve hundred would-have-been victims. The following quotes are important pertaining to the plot of the story and the challenges that the author faced. “We are a nation that loves to take people into our homes. I suppose our values are very much like the Bedouin of the Middle East, for whom sheltering and defending strangers is not just a nice thing to do but a spiritual imperative” (Rusesabagina 12).…

Courage can be defined in a variety of ways; it all depends on what an individual perceives as courageous, and the different aspects of courage they find most important. In the short story “On the Rainy River” Tim O’Brien focuses on the action side of courage. Action meaning the big and small tasks in a person’s life that determine their courageousness. The actions an individual takes when caught in a difficult situation is what defines them as brave. For example, when presenting the Medal of Honor to Staff Sergeant Ty Carter, President Obama concentrates on the physical aspect of courage.…

Courage is one of the only things that will reveal your true character. In our society, the law enforcement and police departments show a lot of courage every day. Police officers everyday go to work in the morning without even knowing if they would come back home without being injured, but they still go because they want to protect the society. This is courageous because they go to work to protect everyone, even though they know that there is a chance where they could get injured or possibly get killed. Not only real people are courageous, but characters in books can also show a tremendous amount of bravery.…

These points are selflessness, staying positive in the face of adversity and facing fears.…
