Several distorted figures with human qualities such as hands and feet and depicted standing in close proximity to each other or being intertwined. The similar body shapes of the human figures shown also contribute to the unity of the work. The smaller objects in the painted are generally different than the blue used throughout. This contrast in color finds a way to highlight the smaller objects and give them emphasis in the midst of the blue. However, the most dominant component of the painting are still the human-like figures. Another area of contrast in this painting is between the curved and straight lines, which are used to illustrate the body of the figures. The figures also create movement, as the eye tries to look beyond the blue representations and understand what the setting, time, and place of the painting is. This causes the eye to look inward in order to find some sense of place, until it finds the bamboo plants in the back. Additionally, Lam created unbalance in this painting by leaving more space on the bottom of the painting than the top, creating a disproportionate

Due to this, the artist keeps the viewers eyes from resting on one area of the composition for far too long. In this painting, Dorothea uses value contrast to show the differences in dark and light. For this painting, the two significant principles of design are emphasis and unity. Schiele created emphasis in this artwork by depicting Koller in the middle of the painting as the focal point. Not only the placement, but also the grouping and the contrast. Schiele emphasized Koller by using mostly blue and dark blue on Koller’s clothes and the sofa he sat in to make the center part as a whole group. Also the books in the back and front are around Koller which emphsized Koller as well.…

The painting is in form of asymmetrical balance, although both the left and right contain similar elements, which are a humanoid figure and a tree, the visual weight is heavier on the right due to the usage of a more saturated colour, which creates a more intense contrast between the red of the humanoid figure and the green of the tree nearby. Moreover, the size of the forms mentioned above is also larger than those of the left, and thus also contribute to the heavier visual weight. In terms of movement and rhythm, as a viewer myself, I would first look at the humanoid figure on the right, then follow his gaze to look up to the trees and then to the sky above, then to the door on the left and then to the tree and humanoid figure on the left.…

Furthermore, the diagonal lines that shape the floor and the barriers of the bridge and the curved lines on the water make a combination of energy and endlessness at the same time because the side of where the scared looking person is, looks completely different from where the water, which is what perhaps reflects the degree of anxiety that the scared looking person was suffering in that particular…
