The poem “Dulce et Decorum Est” by Wilfred Owen revolves around soldiers which are at war and are being faced with different obstacles. The meaning of the poems title is the opposite of what the poem is conveying to us. The poems title means “It Is Sweet and Proper”, however as you read the poem it completely different. The things the soldiers are going through is making them seem older than what they actually are. They also seem to be dying from the different situations they are going through. The scenarios shown in the poem seems to contradict the proud image of soldiers that we have been shown about soldiers at war. The appearance, hardships and environment is brought into light through this poem.

An incident most has occurred in this part of the poem because there seem to be yelling judging from the exclamation marks used. The poem says “GAS! GAS! QUICK, boys!” (Owen line 9). This seems like they were getting attacked by gas and they were trying to escape from it. The aggressiveness from the use of punctuation shows how serious the situation is. In Miller Tyrus’s Overview of 'Dulce et Decorum Est ' states “Owen captures the confusion and fear of a panicky mass of men scurrying to save themselves from threatening death”. This shows the different emotions the men are faced with going through this gas attack. Although, we all know that in war there is a chance of death, we believe that the government is giving them resources to survive most of the things being thrown at them. However, in the poem them seem to lack supplies that would help them through different situations. This gives me the impression that our men are not protected by the government, they are sent out to survive on their own. It seems like they have to run from certain things and can’t even defend themselves. However, on TV we are being shown that Americans are winning the war, however we aren’t being shown the difficulties the soldiers are being face

With this passage, the author wants to show the readers how the series of disasters that can happen in war are able to degrade a person’s character and make them succumb under pressure. In addition, this story is important to notice the fact that even though the character Rat Kiley acted in a way that could be considered as cowardly by shooting himself to get dismissed from war, the other soldiers understand that as an act of courage. By presenting this situation, the author shows how soldiers are connected as one unit when fighting together because they can relate to the situation, once they have lived through similar events. With this in mind, this passage also helps the perceiving of the platoon as a common entity, so it…

Dulce et Decorum Est, is a thought turning poem that really challenges the reader to ask him or herself where they stand on certain deep issues. In Dulce et Decorum Est, the author Wilfred Owen, sought after the issues of warfare, patriotism, and different versions of reality. Whitman uses this line to end each of his stanzas to emphasize the fact that there were many losses to the war, each one significant to different people. This loss characterized by the Captain further develops the fact that the emotional scars of war are from the deaths of many companions during war. Many people developed friends while they were fighting in wars, the Captain symbolizes the loss of those friends. On the other hand, the captain could also symbolize a “fatherly figure” as the soldiers view him as a father With the use of symbolism, Whitman, like Owen, portrays the painful reality of war and its horrific effects on those…

One of the messages that Rosenberg had chosen to represent with this poem is his hatred for the Great War. Rosenberg once wrote a letter to a friend saying “Believe me the army is the most detestable invention on earth and nobody but private in the army knows what it is to be a slave” (Banerjee 314). Rosenberg joined the army because of financial disability, not patriotism like many others at that time. He was not happy to be fighting in the war and from his poem, one can tell he didn’t truly believe in the cause. Rosenberg didn’t like the way that he was being treated throughout the war and wrote his poetry about his negative feelings as a way of letting people know this.…

Have you ever thought about what it was like to live during World War 1, or what it was like to fight at war? At first glance of any war piece, you might think the author would try to portray the soldiers as mentally tough and have a smashing conscience. Many would think that fighting in a war shows how devoted you are to your country. On the contrary, the men who were in this position did not feel that this was a supplementary way to show devotion and actually warned that it wasn’t something to be romanticized. This poem takes place in an actual war, in the point of view of an actual soldier who shows a perspective of war more violent and resentful than glorified and worthy. Wilfred Owen develops his claim that dying for one’s country is not…

/ O yes, you would…why, you can hear the guns.” (38). Unlike before where he realizes the situation he is in and how he can fight it; he seems to be completely engulfed in this nightmare. “Those whispering guns – O Christ, I want to go out / And screech at them to stop – I’m going crazy;” (38). It’s a heart breaking image Sasson paints. It’s an image that is the byproduct of how war can torment men years past the day when they hang up their uniform.…

We can tell this most strongly in the long sentence of the final stanza which builds up to a dramatic, climax with its attack on ‘the old lie’. The tone of ‘Anthem for Doomed Youth’ is less strong and much more sad as we would expect from a poem that mourns the tragic deaths of men at war. The language of this poem is full of gentle, and depressing words, like ‘sad shires’ ‘holy glimmers’ and ‘tenderness’. Here Owen’s tone doesn’t express his anger at the waste-of life but his sense of its tragedy. The structure of the two poems is very different.…

The glory and romanticized idea of war has finally come to a sudden halt now that the soldiers are left to deal with the haunting and crippling consequences of modern warfare. Through the particular use of structure and language, Sassoon and Owen both convey this idea of reality and implement some of their own experiences into their poems. The sacrifices that soldiers made for their country were great, but the consequences and repercussions were unexpected and left many feeling hopeless and lost as they tried to move forward with their lives once the war had ended. Owen remains on a more personal level as he explores the thoughts of a single solider, left disabled in the prime of his life. This solider was swept into the glory of war and the physical appeal he would obtain.…
