After decades of Ignoring an international ban on trading poached ivory, it 's time to give Japan a beatdown for their elephant poching crimes.

Wildlife Planet has focused it 's attention, and rightfully so on China. It 's our poster child for the mass slaughtering of Elephants, Tigers and Rhinos. Without a doubt it has earned much of the blame for the killing of 96 elephants a day across Africa.

China 's role in the butchering of Dogs and cats for food alone deserves worldwide scorn and ridicule. All this makes China Wildlife Planets "king of the douchebags" award winners, but let 's not forget their little butchering douchie cousin, Japan.

In September, 16 members of the United States House of Representatives sent a letter to the ambassador from Japan, noting that failure to enforce regulations on the ivory trade was directly contributing to the rapid disappearance of Africa’s elephants. They pointed out that participation in the trade also provides a funding source for “rebel militias and terrorist groups like the Lord’s Resistance Army, Al-Shabaab, and Boko Haram.” And they called for Japan to end its domestic trade.

After the Ambassador recieved this strongly worded letter he was most grateful because the embassy was running low on Charmin and he really needed to go.

Alessandra Potenza, a writer for New York Times Upfront magazine, sheds light onto the seriousness of Poachers. Poachers, also known as “Trophy Hunters”, are causing the endangered species problem to become worse, specifically African wildlife. Every year 600 lions are killed by Trophy Hunters (column in the middle of pg. 11). An example of this happening is with Cecil (a lion, also a popular tourist attraction) didn’t attack the Trophy Hunters when they shot him with a crossbow but instead ran away; the Trophy Hunters tracked him down and killed 2 days later. (Paragraph 1 and 2, pg. 10)…

“Where for centuries humans and elephants lived in relative peaceful coexistence, there is now hostility and violence” (Siebert 353) This change in behavior is not at all random and draws the attention from researches such as Siebert to answer why this is. The elephants have lost their habitat, food supply, water supply, and a lot of times, family, to ruthless human attacks causing the elephants to go insane. This impacts the elephant's behavior and now it becomes a more intemperate creature where lashing out and attacking humans is common behavior. “Bradshaw and several colleagues argued that today’s elephant populations are suffering from a form of chronic stress, a kind of species-wide trauma” (Siebert 354).…

Whale hunting has suffered from decreasing popular support in recent years. Greater understanding of whales and their place in the ecosystem has coupled with global initiatives and coordination between countries has reduced the number of whaling countries to only three - Japan, Norway, and Iceland. All three of these nations claim that whaling is an important cultural activity worthy of an exemption from a global ban on whaling. This paper will focus on Norway and Japan. Cultural activities can be defined in many ways, and it is wise to be cautious when considering the cultural importance of an activity deemed as unacceptable by the rest of the world.…

“The only language that the Japanese whaling industry understands is economics”, Paul Watson. Whaling has been around for thousands of years, starting with the Norwegians almost 4,000 years ago. Since then, it has become custom for countries to hunt vast amounts of these animals every year, resulting in many species of whale becoming endangered and a significant issue worldwide. Many organizations and countries have chosen to act upon this problem with bans and conservation strategies, but some have still been caught finding loopholes. Although whaling has been handled irresponsibly in the past, small-scale whaling should be considered acceptable, when new regulations are set in place so the action is much more sustainable and will not follow the mistakes of overfishing in the past.…

An Exemption for Whaling The Norwegian and Japanese have argued that they should be granted an exemption from the international ban on whaling, hunting for whales. They have asked for this exemption based on cultural positions. The Norwegians and Japanese argue that the species of whales they hunt are not endangered, not would the numbers that they hunt caused them to become endangered, and that these activities are a deep historically rooted cultural activity for their people. This brings up long rooted questions about international activities and how they impact local groups.…

It appears like Japan does not really care about the global ban on whales. It has been reported that Japan will continue their hunting of whales after a 365 day drought. Japan seems convinced about the idea that whales don't deserve to live. It has been announced that Japan will only do it, however, on a limited level and it will not be a full on whale killing spree.…

Over the years people have all faced many life changing decisions. Once a conclusion had been met and the decision had been made, many of us don’t take the time to look back upon our choice. Reflecting on whether an external influence may have affected our preferred option can also arise questions about our morals at the time of the decision. We can see this quite clearly in George Orwell’s “Shooting an Elephant”. His popular essay uses imagery to recount a moral dilemma he had faced early in life.…
