Wild vs Reality In the Cheryl Strayed’s memoir, Wild, Strayed undergoes a journey in which she encounters a completely new learning experience. Strayed’s journey through the Pacific Crest Trail is much like my personal journey transitioning from high school, to pursue a higher education in college. While reading the memoir, I encountered some similarities between my journey and Strayed’s adventure along the Pacific Crest Trail. Similar to Strayed’s journey, I was called to an unknown adventure, college. I had watched movies about college, and I even watched my relatives go off to school, but I had not endured the journey personally. For me, the transition was not as difficult as I expected it to be, but it was certainly a new experience, …show more content…
All of the traumatic events lead to Strayed’s ambition to leave her life, to set out on a journey through the Pacific Crest Trail. Unlike Strayed, I did not endure any traumatic events throughout my high school career; however, I did have a disagreement with my parents regarding whether or not I should go away for college. At first, my parents seemed a bit hesitant to the idea of their last child leaving for college, but they soon opened up more to the idea once they got a chance to view the campus of West Georgia. Once it had hit senior year, I knew automatically that I wanted to attend college, specifically, the University of West Georgia. Similar to Strayed, I prepared myself with the essentials needed for college; such as applications for colleges, and sending off my ACT and SAT scores to the right locations. All throughout senior year, my counselors ensured that I had all the information needed to apply to colleges to ease the transition from high school to college. Strayed goes out of her way to make sure she has all of the essentials for her journey through the Pacific Crest Trail. Like Strayed, I made sure that I completed all of my college applications prior to the deadlines to ensure my place at the school. My counselors acted as mentors for me, as Greg is a mentor for Strayed. With the assistance from my counselors, I had all of the …show more content…
While at the University of West Georgia, I have met numerous of people who I have become fairly close with. It is important to make friends during a transition to help ease the move from one moment to the next moment. Strayed says it best when she expresses the kindness she encounters along the trail; “I’d been the recipient of one kindness after another” (296). The first couple weeks in college seemed a bit stressful at first, primarily due to the fact that I did not know anyone. During Strayed’s journey, she is alone at first, but receives some guidance from her peers that she meets along the trail. Albert is one of the major characters within the memoir, who aids Strayed with what is vital to have within her backpack. All along the trail, Strayed encounters different people who assist her in different ways that benefit her trip. At the University of West Georgia, I have recently met with my professors during their office hours, and they have been a tremendous help with my studies. Not only did my professors help me with my transition into college, my advisor, Ms. Keri Allen, helped me in more ways than one. She helped me register for my classes, and ensured that I was transitioning well into college. The guidance I received helped the transition from high school to college easier for me. I think this story idea will interest Huck readers. Along the US-Mexico border, migrants and thru-hikers walk side-by-side but worlds apart. The Pacific Crest Trail attracts two types of people long-distance hikers about to start the journey of a lifetime and northbound migrants seeking better lives in the US. In spring, their paths converge near wooden columns marking the start of the 2,060 -mile journey that traverses the spine of the Sierra Mountains to the Canadian border. Both the thru-hikers and the migrants share a common bond and that's to cross the southernmost section of the PCT safely, while carrying the weight of expectations on their shoulders.…

In the movie Wild, Cheryl Strayed hikes the Pacific Crest Trail trying to find closure and discover her self worth. To me it seems like she is running from a troubled and psychologically damaged past. The trail is rough and she has a hard time getting through it on her own. The people she meets on the trail almost always help her in one way or another, whether they intended to or not. She ends up going through different stages of self-concept, self-esteem, and self efficacy.…

My past laid out upon a table. My GPA, my resume, my test scores. An unfamiliar man whom I met for the first time was frowning, turning around in his creaky red chair, while hurriedly trying to contextualize my life with just a few pieces of paper. For 15 minutes, he sat there, unhappy, tapping his foot, analyzing what I’ve “done” with my life. He took a sip of water and suggested that I go to community college.…

It would have been easier for me to change majors for the sake of graduation, but being in such a predicament only sharpened my perseverance and molded my determination. While these academic complications seemed unbearable at the time, my senior year turned out to be my most challenging year.…
