To begin, you will need more than just a few bees if you want the hive to thrive. The best way is to obtain a large quantity of bees, but the question remains as to how. Surprisingly, getting honeybees is not all that difficult, but there are a few methods that are regularly undertaken to obtain the bees needed. As a novice beekeeper, you should probably leave the more difficult methods to keepers with more experience, but it's best to have the knowledge that there are other ways.

Some seasoned beekeepers will argue that, because this method is free, it is the best way to get bees for your hive. However, free does mean easy, safe, or even likely if you can't find a wild beehive. You also need to take into account that you cannot guarantee that the wild bees you capture aren't of the Africanized variety.

It was a warm quiet Okanagan evening and as I sat out on the deck and watched a small car enter the driveway. A tall elderly gentleman unfolded from the car to sell a jar of honey. This seemingly insignificant gesture was the beginning of becoming the owners of “Arlo’s Honey Farm”. As green as grass and armed with a beekeeping book founder’s husband purchased – she jumped in and did her best. The bees have taught her many things, aside from a fast track education in beekeeping.…

There are things that people may need to be cautious of before deciding to keep bees, but there are benefits to consider as well. Sue Hubbell author of A Book of Bees writes, “Everyone should have two or three hives of bees. Bees are easier to keep than a dog or a cat. They are more interesting than gerbils” (qtd. in Bishop pp. 1).…

Bees sting once and then die; their stinger is simply a defense mechanism. If people learn to not be scared of bees, then they will be less likely to kill them on sight, and more likely to plant gardens full of bee-friendly plants, which could go a long way towards saving these…

    • Honeybees only swarm once or twice per year, but Africanized bees often swarm at least 10 times annually. Africanized bees have small swarms, sometimes no bigger than a softball; honeybees have much larger swarms. • When selecting a nesting site, honeybees look for cavities that have a volume of approximately 10 gallons. They nest in protected, dry, clean locations that are above ground. Africanized bees tend to nest in smaller cavities, sometimes places that have volumes of as little as one or two gallons.…

Which is a very difficult task but is not impossible with today’s technology and future technology. The decline in bees is directly related back to humans. PAN UK states in the article Bee Declines that “The first reports of large scale bee deaths that were attributed to CCD started to arrive from the US in 2006, and have continued since with an estimated 30% of managed colonies being lost each year.” So if a hive had 1,000 bees including the queen, worker and nursing bees 300 of them would be dead over the summer time, with more expected to die over the winter months as well. More than 300 bees would be dead from each managed colony.…

As stated previously, African honey bees were more aggressive in nature than the European honey bees. Because of this trait, the African honey bees were able to effectively ward off the presence of small hive beetles, especially in strong colonies. In the weaker honey bee colonies in Africa, the beetles had a better chance of dominating, but it was very unlikely. In places where there are numerous European honey bee colonies, the small hive beetles are able to persevere in both strong and weak colonies. Reports have further illustrated that the…

This allows the hive to be susceptible to diseases, the reason for this is because you have a large amount of bees in a small area. This allows the diseases to be easily transferred. When a study was conducted in 2012, it’s goal was to “test the importance of small nests and frequent swarming”(Smith, Carter and Seeley) For this study they observed “small-hives”(Smith, Carter and Seeley) colonies and “large-hives”(Smith, Carter and Seeley) colonies.…

While in the topic of buying locally, buy local, raw honey. Buying honey raw and local insures that the hives aren’t treated with chemicals which is better for you and the bees in the long run.
