Wiglaf's Argumentative Essay

If at any moment you found yourself lost in the hefty narrative of Beowulf, treading alongside the many songs and flashbacks, in class on Thursday we discussed the introduction of our “thought” aircraft marshall, Wiglaf. Beginning shortly after line 2626, Wiglaf (a “new to this” young fighter and kinsmen of Beowulf’s) enters stage left with two handheld illuminated beacons to attract our attention and interest; to garner attention to his “wise and fluent words” on our hero. Filled with sorrow, he rallies the troops with images of their bodies “robed in the same burning blaze as my gold-giver’s body” to both establish glory in battle and a debt to fighting alongside Beowulf. Dr. Hedman proposed that Wiglaf’s purpose is to direct our response to a figure like Beowulf during the “speech before the battle cry” and ultimately, Beowulf’s death, moment of the narrative.

Inserting the phrase “spoiler alert!” just then was not necessary due a proleptic prophecy of this dragon battle leading to Beowulf’s death. The oral storytelling tradition could have been a main reason why the story remained popular, even if everyone already knew the ending,

Instead, he wished for all of the gold to be brought before his eyes so that he could gaze upon it before he passed -very Scrooge-esque. We then talked about the differing values, ethics, and aesthetics, of generations and how our own values could be clouding our interpretation of the text. Power and consolidated wealth definitively mark a dastardly individual in Christian narratives, which in turn causes us to shudder at Beowulf’s last request. What does this mean? Is it okay for a hero to be greedy; to be ultimately held down by his love of money? But before we travel down that path of thought, aircraft marshall Wiglaf frantically waves his beacons to get us back on

It is this greed that ultimately leads to his death at the end of the epic. These values differ markedly from those displayed by the modern twenty-first century hero – one who is courageous, yet humble; passionate, yet noble; and driven, yet charitable. Though the Anglo-Saxons hold Beowulf in the highest esteem, the protagonist’s conceit, competitiveness, and ultimate greed limit his heroic symbolism for the modern reader. Beowulf’s conceit does not belittle his legitimate strength and epic deeds. Nevertheless, it is this flaw that defines Beowulf as soon as he enters the story.…

Grendel’s mother is described as “a monstrous ogress” who attacks the mead hall to avenge her son. Because Grendel’s mother is as strong as Beowulf, he has to wear full armour and use a sword in this fight. This preparation indicates that Beowulf is not confident when he has to fight with anger and vengeance. As a pagan hero, Beowulf believes in vengeance: “It is better for a man/ to avenge his friend than to refresh his sorrow” (1383-4). He sets up to kill Grendel’s mother to avenge Ashhere, Hthrogar’s counsellor.…

If Beowulf’s sole heroic quality was his strength than when he discovered he was not as strong as the Dragon he would have either fled or called for help. His courage and self-sacrifice is what aided him in his defeat of the Dragon. Even his death is heroic. Beowulf’s death encourages his men to have courage in themselves and at the same time inspires them to new heights. A hero more than anything needs the confidence and courage to defeat a villain.…

In both modern and ancient times, gold is a versatile, tangible symbol of wealth and power, and a standard on which monetary and symbolic value is placed. In Anglo-Saxon England, many connotations of gold are represented in the poem Beowulf, translated by Seamus Heaney. John Gardner's novel Grendel presents gold in a modern literary context. Although both literary works focus on relatively the same characters and context, gold plays a different role in each. The meaning of gold in Beowulf evolves from a traditional connotation to a darker symbol as the plot develops, while in Grendel, the way characters interact with gold reveals their different moral and ethical views.…

Wiglaf has shown courage in his own right when he declines to renounce in his battle, saying, “A warrior will sooner die than live a life of shame” (2890-2891). Withdrawing would be dishonorable and consequently disgraceful, it is not honorable to the great kinsmen like Wiglaf. There were numerous of soldiers that fought beside Beowulf and while they were at Beowulf funeral, Wiglaf stated that their lack of courage to disregard, told them “I would rather my body were robed in the same, burning blaze as my gold-giver’s body, than go back home bearing arms” (2651-2653).
