He had no other choice but to pay her back for her answer, meaning he must marry her. On their wedding night he threw himself a pity party, or as line 159 says, “ He wallowed back and forth in desperate style.” He goes on to degrade and put her down, saying she’s old and poor, but she makes a strike back. The old lady , puts the knight in his place, basically telling him that just because he was born into a higher class doesn’t mean he is of the same qualities as his parents or even their parents. The old lady argues that you can be poor, just as he had said about her, and doing the right thing. The poor do more with less, while the rich do less with more. Later into the night, once she has given her spiel, she gives him the option to have her old yet faithful, or young and unfaithful. He took into consideration at this point about what she had said, and gave her the option to do as she wished.
