I’ve been exposed to a few wicked problems throughgout my life, or at least those that are consierder extremely unpleasent. According to C. West Churchman, the term “Wicked Problem” refer to that class of social system problems which are ill-formulated, impossible to solve, decisions making conflicts with values, and in the whole system all becomes thoroughly confused (Churchman 1967). With this in mind, I want to point out one wicked problem in specific that always challenged my position of being self-employed. The distinction depends upon much more than what the parties call themselves, but for providing a service on a freelance basis, the hiring and firing of labors, and day-in and day-out of headaches that goes along with it. As an independent contractor who lays ceramic tile for a living, I have to depend on helpers to get the job done. This is where the evil or morally wrong sets in. I am one man, with one truck, and I need one or two workers to help me throughout the day in or around the homeowners. What kind of individuals I can mustered up at the time will depend on how long I can keep the workers busy. If I have a seasonal business, then most of my helpers will fine better work during the winter months. On the other hand, if I can leave the job with trusting individuals, and make bids on other jobs during the day then I will have more work. That is the wicked problem I face, to leave the job with recently hired workers at the home of my clients to fine more work. Wicked problems affect the company’s mission statement by its identity and while strategies may change, this often does not (Camillus, 2008). The bottom line here is if one of my workers starts having sticky fingers in someone’s home while I am working in another room or gone then who suffers. The answer is - we all do! I have to fire my worker, because he can no longer be trusted. I will never be able to receive any more work from the homeowner, plus I will have to find another maybe to place inside their home.
