Wicked Play Analysis

Great Essays
Today I am going to write a professional performance response about a musical play I watched called “Wicked”. The play is a musical based on the novel called “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” and is an alternate telling of the classic film known as “The Wizard of Oz” which takes place before Dorothy’s arrival to the Land of Oz and provides a prequel by explaining how Elphaba became the Wicked Witch we have come to know her as and told in her perspective along with the Good Witch of the North, Glinda. I am going to cover my experiences and thoughts before I went to the theater and what it was like going there and my experience watching the play by writing about what opinions did it leave me about certain scenes whether …show more content…
The idea that this is a prequel to "The Wizard of Oz" really interested me to know more about one of my favorite villains of all time who is playing the main character role in this play and the reason she is one of my favorite villains is because she possesses some traits a villain should have and what she had were theatrics and a maniacal nature. The Play also introduces a character named Fiyero who is a prince Elphaba falls in love with that would eventually be known as the Scarecrow which really confused me and made me question where exactly did they get the idea of the Scarecrow actually being involved with the Wicked Witch which made little sense to me since I do remember the original story yet the play added many confusing scenes that made little to no sense which makes it look as if the movie really destroyed what this play was telling on some occasions like how the Wicked Witch seems less heartless in this play than on the film which made me question how did she gain that maniacal nature I mentioned before to begin with especially with the ending the play left off as if it was a cliffhanger that does not seem to have a follow-up considering this is supposedly how the Wicked Witch was supposedly dead before Dorothy arrived to the Land of Oz. The scenes I mentioned may not have impressed me much like many others such as the scenes where both Elphaba and Glinda have this relationship toward one another and what saddens me is knowing that it would eventually end in such a tragedy by faking her death which separated them from one another to stop the fear of the residents of Oz which makes me feel as if the Wicked Witch was forcing her role in

The production Anon(ymous) by Naomi Iizuka was produced by Playscripts, Inc. Anon(ymous) was shown in the John Anthony Theatre at Collin College and was attended on the 8th of October, 2016. Location of seating in the theatre was to the left facing the stage where the seats were furthest and slightly elevated. An advantage to this position in the theatre was having the ability to see over others who chose to be seated closer to the stage, so the entire set was able to be seen in its whole. Due to this position in the theatre a big disadvantage was not being able to see facial expressions of the actors and actresses too well. Anon(ymous) opens with refugees recalling what they remember from their homeland.…

Joseph Cornell was an artist known for his shadow box art. He kept his interests separate and together by creating these boxes which also reflected the small wooden house in which he lived. The script is made of compartments rather than having one event trigger another. A character may come into a scene or Cornell may move out of a scene and the scene completely changes. It is not always clear if the stage directions are to only be followed or if some are to be read.…

The actors had a lot of energy that undoubtedly captured the viewer’s attention. Each actor had a certain characteristic that made him or her truly fascinating to watch. They were able to interact with each and every audience member. This left me, a viewer, who was in the middle of the room, feeling as though I was in the play. The plays story may have been their biggest obstacle, however.…

On Sunday November 20, at 2 pm I saw High Point University’s production of Curtains. The play had Hayworth theatre’s first and second floors packed with a lively audience. The audience was mostly filled with family consisting of parents, grandparents, and younger children. Some parents and older members of the audience had bouquet of flowers in their hands, probably to give to the cast or crew members after the show. I would consider the show house half full because the majority of the audience was laughing along with the play, seemed intrigued at compelling parts, and were swaying along with the musical numbers.…

Jane Anderson’s The Reprimand and Michael Hollinger’s Naked Lunch both portray how men have power and dominance over women. In The Reprimand, the two ladies are discretely fighting over a man, their boss, but play it off as if they just don’t like each other and don’t work well with each other. In Naked Lunch, the ex boyfriend can’t handle that his ex girlfriend won’t eat meat anymore. Eventually he gets her to eat it. The two plays are different but alike.…

    Play Critique Essay

As a person who has only attened two other plays in their life, people might call me “unqualified” to review a play; these people are wrong. My qualifications for play review come solely from an “excess” amount of musicals listened to, pirated videos, and animatics watched on youtube. Seeing Guys and Dolls live was a great experience as a whole, and I enjoyed myself throughly. Understandably there were a few things that I disagreed with, so I will nitpick and pretend that my qualifications alone make me justified to critique a play that no doubt took alot of effort, stress, and love to make.…

Gregory Maguire’s novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, is a rework of the classic novel, The Wizard of Oz, written by L. Frank Baum. The novel aims to reveal the other side of Oz; the true side that the first novel masked. Munchkinland is no longer the peaceful place that we are accustomed to, but rather it is now full of political upheaval. The Wizard in Wicked has managed to usurp the throne and instill his own totalitarian regime. One important political issue that arises is the idea of social oppression.…

Interview about Gender Confusion in Twelfth Night Our presentation about the play, Twelfth Night, by William Shakespeare, was about gender confusion. Our interview demonstrated how gender confusion took place in the play since the characters were deceived into believing that Viola was a male. Our presentation was in the form of an interview, which had two characters from the play and two audience members. I believe that our presentation was well in the terms of context of the interview and the overall topic that was demonstrated to the audience.…
