In other words, artistic objects with valuable meanings are less appealing than exotic goods or products to the average person. The short story The Safe, written by Tim Gautreaux demonstrates a situation in which a few workers in a junkyard discover a safe with a fancy sewing machine inside of it. With the exception of one character, Alva, the rest of them find objects with physical value more appealing than ones with artistic and sentimental value. She married a banker named Edward Wharton and they moved to Lenox, Massachusetts together, where they watched local farmers. She used her observations to write the 19th century classic, Ethan Frome, about the relationship struggles between Ethan Frome, his wife Zeena, and her cousin Mattie Silver (Wharton). The book uses symbolism and the three parts of the subconscious, namely id, superego, and ego, to form a story full of foreshadowing and characters’ secret desires (“Id”; “Ego”; “Superego”). Piggy’s glasses represent adults, from the clarity and intelligence they symbolize in their owner, the safety they insure others, hope of rescue brought by adults, and power they bring the bearer.…

Relationships during the present time are what I feel need the most focus. Relationships between a man and a woman as well as relationships between women ( African-American) and how they treat each other depending on their social class was just ridiculous. In both the movie and the stage play the lady in Green in the play and Miss Juanita Sims in the movie is a strong woman who shows progression through both versions. The lady in green/ Juanita Sims shows how she has come to the edge when it comes to relationship with men who like to “Run off with her stuff.”…

In the “pursuit of materialism,” objects can often define a character’s depiction and can play a part in displaying their personality as stated by Thomas C. Foster of How To Read Novels Like A Professor. Chapter 14, titled The Light on Daisy’s Dock, maintains “...the Law of Character Clarity: To understand characters, you have to know their deepest desires. More often than not, that desire finds an emblem -an object or action- to give it tangible expression” (Thomas C. Foster 173). The tactic of characterization through items is used masterfully in such short stories as: Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been, Silver Waters, and The Second Bakery Attack to give readers a more in-depth look at the characters without directly telling them,…

Fairy tales, such as Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid”, appeal to a sense of romance, adventure, and the fight between good and evil. Society supports retelling the fairy tales because they support traditional moral values society desires its children to learn.…
