I have a four year old son, and I read to him every single night. I believe that reading to him encourages his imagination, literary skills and helps us to build a bond. When I read to my son I can the little wheels in his head turning. He asks questions, and tells me what about the story that he thinks is interesting and what he would change. Often times when we are playing together he will bring something I read to him from a story into his imaginative play time.
I started reading to my son when he was very young. He was a late talker, but once he started talking he picked up words and meanings so quickly. A few months ago we were in the car and I was lecturing him about having an attitude and he said to me, “Mom, you’re manipulating me.” And he used the word correctly pertaining to what he was feeling. A trip to Hastings or the library can turn in to a great adventure for us. Sometimes we even go to story time at our local public library. It has become something special my son and I are able to do together. He also relies on us to read to him every night.
