Why You Should Know How Much Your Coworkers Get Paid By David Burkus

David Burkus discusses a topic that involves pay transparency. Throughout his presentation Burkus discusses how important disclosing how much each employee makes is. Instead of hiding the salary each employee makes; sharing that number and it being available for everyone to see creates a much better relationship between employees and their managers. In the paper Burkus’s point will be presented as well as analyzed. Included will be how Burkus’s points are in relation to personal lives and businesses. Pay Transparency David Burkus is a management researcher, an author, podcaster, and a professor at Oral Roberts University. “Unless the organisations are transparent on salary ranges - many of the employees will never even know if they have been short changed…” (2014) This becomes a problem because if an employee was to print off a paystub at their workplace and another co-worker stopped by the printer and that employee has the same position and both have same qualifications and the employee sees that his co-worker is getting paid much more than he is and he feels he does more there will be a problem. It will create distrust with the company which will lead to less productivity but also more distrust when this employee shares his findings with others and will break relationships in a workplace. “Keeping secrets hinders our ability to be truly intimate with friends and mates.” (Sholl, et al., 2011) when there are secrets like this especially with money it can create a barrier in a company and this will not result pretty for the company. As the Better Business Bureau says “Trust of course plays a massive role in building business relationships. Trust takes time to earn, but can be thrown away in minutes.” (2016) There must be a relationship in the workplace because it will create trust and that trust between employees will make the company succeed if there are secrets the trust and relationships will be affected negatively and by keeping …show more content…
Pay transparency creates discomfort but there is much more discomfort when there is a lack of trust, being underpaid, and possibly being discriminated. At a company level without pay transparency there will be a lack of productivity in the company because no one will compete for wages when they don’t have an idea what his or her co-worker is making compared to if they knew they would try harder at work which could help negotiate a better salary. There are many positive benefits with being transparent with pay as opposed to having it be a secret where companies will take advantage, but will suffer in the end.
