Why When Is Violence Justified?

A man stops you through the streets, and starts to harass you. The streets are crowded, so no one notices you two. You try to get away, telling this strange man to stop, but he is persisted, and does not let you escape (Gleave, “When Is Violence Justified?”). How would you get out of this situation? Begging this man to have mercy, or turning to physical contact to forcefully push him aside? At those circumstances, nobody knows for sure if violence is ever a necessity, but other types of violence such as domestic should never be tolerated, so when would it be? In some opinions, people say that violence should be tolerated because aggression is part of our human nature, hence the violence (Glowacki, “Are people violent by nature? Probably.”). …show more content…
However, when they did nothing about it and the kid kept on hurting me, I ended up snapping and punched the bully in the face to the point where he started bleeding and begging me to stop what I was doing to him. Ever since the fight, the kid has not bullied me or others since then, in fact, he's now so scared of doing it ever again. So that helped solve my problems.”. This is what an anonymous user said on the debate “Should violence be used to solve a problem?” on Debate.org. Violence has had a big impact on the history of mankind. Violent actions has been used for the worst. For example, when settlers killed Native Americans over their lands, when Adolf Hitler murdered 3 million Jews over his hatred for them, or when the (most recent) ISIS attack against Paris slaughtered hundreds ( "Paris Attacks: What Happened on the Night - BBC News." BBC News): these were all settled in brutal ways, all killing innocent lives (Welsh “Is Violence Ever Justified? Does Violence Ever Solve Anything?”). Violence can also be justified, which is just what American soldiers on May 1, 2011 to kill Saudi Arabian terrorist Osama bin Laden, who was in charge of the 9/11 attack, this prevented another terrorist attack that Bin Laden would have executed hundreds or even thousands of people with (“Osama Bin Laden” History.com)! In summary, violence can be used in both good and bad ways, but again, it really depends on the

When the Towers Fell, We Took a Stand In a recent Ted talk presentation, executive director of the Albert Einstein Institution, Jamila Raqib, discusses how she knows the secret on how to resolve conflict in a non-violent technique. She goes on to state how there are over one hundred techniques of non-violent actions that can be taken to resolve harsh issues instead of using violence. Although I understand what she is saying and agree to a certain extent, I think living during the time of a terrorist attack has made me realize there are certain circumstances that can only be handled with violence. If we as a country did not result to violence and retaliate against Bin Laden, our country would have lived in constant fear, there would have been more attacks organized by him, and other terrorists from other locations would have seen our country as weak and possibly set forth plans to attack us also.…

In Carrie Goldman's article, "Why Telling Bullying Victims to 'Just Fight Back' Doesn't Work", it describes why telling kids to fight their bullies is not a good solution. The article starts by telling readers how many schools are implementing different bullying programs for students although many groups say this method is not working. The article also focuses on the habits of bullies; their repetitive nature and the different types of them. Thus, sadly teens and bully victims have hurt themselves to deal and cope with the bullying. On the other hand, if kids do fight their bully it is not solving anything; likewise, the fighting is sending a negative message and turns into kids out bullying each other.…

The use of deadly force is back in the spotlight after several controversial killings of unarmed suspects by the police. Deadly force, according to the law, is force which a reasonable person would consider likely to cause death or serious bodily harm (“Use Of Deadly”, 2015). It should only be used when there is no other option and police are authorized to use it only in certain circumstances (“Use Of Deadly”, 2015). Violence is visible to our everyday lives with events such as war and fights. These violent events have tragic effects, although some may occur with a short lived prosperity. Mahatma Gandhi sums up this concept as he stated: “I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent”. For example, one of the most well known wars in American history, the American Revolution, further proves Gandhi’s point. The British had a well trained army, thus, allowing them to be victorious in multiple battles, although they lost the war.…

Violence can be described as the intent to hurt or damage something or someone, which can be done in a number of ways. The group of writings that I chose was under the title of “Cultures of Violence”, and I believe that this heading efficaciously describes the two essays within it. On War by James Boswell, and The Paranoid Style of American Policing by Ta-Nehisi Coates, each tell their thoughts on violence and how they view it within different areas of today’s society. However, I feel that On War is better able to effectively convey its purpose. The purpose of On War by James Boswell was to tell his personal thought on the irrationality of war.…

Man must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation" King not only preached nonviolence, he practiced it. He used words rather than fists, and marches rather than guns. King's ability to rise above the common misconception of the need to fight fire with fire, and be morally better than his oppressors was mind numbing. To be violent while making a moral stand ruins the moral stand. King's moral courage is so provocative because of his commitment to nonviolence in the face of intense violence every day.…

People should not use violence in any matters that rise and threaten peaceful democratic values. For instance, back in United States history of racism, leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. never used violence to protest the inequality between white and black citizens. During Selma march, the first time they went to cross the bridge, African Americans and the supporters got beaten by the police. However, they never responded back with violence. At last, they were able to get to their finish line.…
