Nuclear weapons are very destructive. They cause terrible damage to anything they hit and surrounding area. Although only two have been used in war the threat that more could be used is very possible. Many countries and terrorist groups are trying to get their hands on nuclear materials and weapons so that they can cause harm to other more powerful countries. How the weapon is made, what it is, its effects on the environment, treaties formed, nuclear security, and the threat of nuclear war are all very important to remember about how destructive nuclear weapons are. Three major treaties that have been created for nuclear weapons are the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear weapons Treaty (NPT), Comprehensive nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), and Partial Test Ban Treaty (PTBT). The Non-Proliferation of Nuclear weapons Treaty was created in 1968 with China, Russia, US, UK, France, and North Korea. These states created the treaty to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, to promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and to further the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament and general and complete disarmament (Fact Sheets & Briefs). India, Isreal, Pakistan, Iraq, Libya, and Syria have violated the treaty and North Korea has withdrawn from the treaty. Another treaty called the Comprehensive nuclear Test Ban Treaty was created in 1996 after the US, Russia, UK, France, and China all successfully tested nuclear weapons. This treaty put a slight ban on testing nuclear weapons and a big ban on turning nuclear energy reactors into bomb material producers without permission from a committee (Fact Sheets & Briefs). This treaty will only work though if all states with nuclear reactors ratify it and only about ¾ have so far (Fact Sheets & Briefs). The Partial Test Ban Treaty put a ban on all nuclear weapon
