In Tamara Brenner’s “The use of Mobile Devices in the College Classroom”, she finds that cellphones commonly lead to distraction in the classroom. She does acknowledge the positive uses of mobile devices such as learning apps that can greatly impact the functionality of the college course; however, she cites many studies that reveal the student’s poor ability to multitask. A student who texted during class was found to do worse off in class when it came to note-taking and understanding the material expressed in the class. Brenner also demonstrates an effect one student has over the neighboring students. In multiple surveys, the students who surrounded the one with the phone exhibited worse test scores than those who were further away from the…

The “shut down your screen week” proposal is a wise decision. Multiple schools rely on many technology based programs to notify students about their assignments that are due. While people heavily depend on technology to do their homework, we also need to learn how to organize ourselves without technology. Although having one week of school without technology might waste a lot of paper, it won’t last very long and we learn very important skills that we will need later in our lives. There are many reasons why schools should have “shut down your screen week.…

I must admit that cell phones are a major distraction to the learning environment and I am guilty of checking my phone while in class. Although they can be a helpful tool, cell phones need to be eliminated from the classroom as much as possible. In modern times it is very typical to see new technology being utilized as a tool in university classrooms. Whether it’s a laptop used to follow along with lecture slides and take notes, or a phone to quickly fact check and connect with others in the class, during lectures, there is a multitude of technological devices at students’ disposal. Despite the benefits of convenience and easy access to resources, Dietz and Henrich (2014) have demonstrated that technology, specifically phones for texting, have detrimental effects on students’ final grade point average. Some professors have taken action against it forcing students to keep their phones or other devices off or stowed away during the lecture period . However, this may not be the most effective…

These devices can make phone calls, send messages and browse the web and are important and necessary in our 21st century society. However, cell phone use has gone too far- especially in our education systems. While cell phones can have positive impacts inside the classroom for learning purposes, this piece of technology should be prohibited during school hours because students abuse this privilege and are misusing their smartphones which is harming their education and the wellbeing of themselves and others. A chronic issue surrounding cell phone use is cyberbullying through social media.…
