I believe that if students fail, they shouldn’t be held back. One reason is that students who are held back tend to have lower grades than students who move ahead. Students who are held back are more likely to drop out of school than students who were never retained. Retained students are more likely to have poorer education and employment when they grow up. Retention lowers a student’s self-esteem and may make them feel like they are unintelligent. This may in turn cause them to give up on their academics. These students may also be bullied by students who have not been retained and who feel that they are smarter. Also, there is no evidence of long-term benefits to retention.
