Why We Should Start Later In High School

I would like to talk to you about an issue that I think nearly all High School students have to deal with everyday. It’s waking up early to go to school. We all know that it is a problem many students have. According to National sleep Foundation a shift in sleep cycles beginning in adolescence that makes it more difficult for most teenagers to fall asleep as early as younger children or older adults.Typical sleep cycles begin around 11:30 p.m for teenagers and continue through 6-7 a.m. This means that an early wake-up not only allows 6 or 7 hours of sleep per school night at most but also requires students to wake up in the middle of deep sleep. According to Mary A. Carskadon most adolescents need about 9 hours of sleep per night. Today nearly 2/3 get under 7, and 2/5 get under 6 hours of sleep per night. Around 10% of the U.S. high schools currently start before 8:00 a.m. which means that students …show more content…
In the 1970s and 1980s, however, many schools shifted to earlier hours . If we change the public school start time, good results will begin to show on the students, for example if school started at 9am and ended around 3-4pm kids would not stay unsupervised because a lot of adults finish their work at the same time. This change can also reduce risky behaviors and crime in teenagers. The people who disagree with me would say that it is better for students to start the school early, and finish it early so they would have more time to do whatever they want, but I disagree with their argument because based on my research, especially High School students, stay unsupervised after school when they finish at 1:30 or 2:00 pm and they do a lot of bad things for example smoke, drink and etc. My conclusion is that if schools started around 9 am students would become more successful at school, they would have less time doing things that they are not supposed to do and live healthier

Teens shouldn’t be affect with these possibilities of not being in an activity because the later changes. There has been a non-scientific survey that has reported 50 percent of parent that have agree or are undecided with the new time changes and 60 percent of staff agreed with the change. I believe that parents think it’s right for their children to start later or earlier because of the evidence that they have been provided about their children academic improvement. Staff had worked in school with the children and they might also believe it is right because it can change their school education but they don’t understand that it can affect the different schools because it will not be the same times for all…

It is an ongoing argument on whether high school students should arrive at schools later to help the teens who are sleep deprived, depressed and have serious mood swings. This is inconvenient for a number of reasons. Parents cannot get their children to school on time if the school time is changed, and it interrupts the teens schedules who are already accustomed to the 7:30 time scheduling. In the passage “ High schools starting later to help sleepy teens” by: Michelle Trudeau it states that later school times are helping the teens be more alert in class, they have less depression issues and the parents have less problems than before due to their emotions being more regulated.…

People worldwide are concerned about schools starting too early in the day and have been debating about the benefits of later school start times. Every weekday, students must face the struggle of waking up early to get ready for school without getting enough sleep the night before. Schools starting at a later time during weekdays would allow students to have extra time to sleep in the morning and be more alert and focused. This can result in less sleep-related car accidents and tardies. It can also provide opportunities for students to succeed in school because studies show that alert students are more willing to study and understand concepts than if they were tired.…
