First, genetically modified food posses potencial risk to human health. Studies show that genetically modified food posses several toxins. Pesticides associated to genetically modified foods , are engineered to tolerate herbicides such as glyphosate and gluphosinate or insecticides such as the bacterial toxin bacillus thuringien- sis. (Aris, Leblanc 2011) Also it can increase the risk of food based allergies, The potential of any new food to induce allergic reactions has been seized upon by critics of GM crops, which contain foreign or engineered proteins, and has been promulgated as …show more content…
Genetically modified can cause problems such as crosspollination, super weeds and toxicity. These damages the natures, for example pesticide producing crops will contaminate near by water source, causing harm to aquatic life. Farmers use tons of herbicides, and over use of herbicides resulted superweed. Between 1996 and 2008, US farmers sprayed an extra 383 million pounds of herbicide on GMOs. Overuse of Roundup results in "superweeds," resistant to the herbicide. This is causing farmers to use even more toxic herbicides every year. Not only does this create environmental harm, GM foods contain higher residues of toxic herbicides. Roundup, for example, is linked with sterility, hormone disruption, birth defects, and cancer.
