Joel Baer’s British Piracy in the Golden Age (2008) has made reviewing such cases monumentally easier, for which I am deeply indebted. My research strives to go beyond a superficial analysis of the most widely circulated and notorious cases and examine the entire era of colonial piracy trials. The hope is that by carefully analyzing piracy legislation, and the way in which officials interpreted those policies in their courtrooms, we are able to better understand the perceived threat of piracy and the extent to which royal officials were willing to tolerate contradictory procedures in order to eliminate that…

After reading “Account: A Computer Pirate Tells His Story”, I do not believe the act of piracy that Steve committed could be considered deviant. The reactivist or relativist definition of deviance could prove to true when considering Steve’s actions. The authors of “Sociology of Deviant Behavior” have described the relativist definition of deviance to be “in the eye of the beholder” (Clinard and Meier, 2016, pg. 7). There were no individuals that were harmed or injured in this act, and while stealing and reproducing material is considered a crime, many individuals, especially students, consider this to be normal. One could even assert that Steve was helping his fellow classmates to save money, which as a college student is rather difficult…

Copyright Guide For any creative or intellectual work to be protected by copyright law, it has to be an idea that has been fixed and expressed in some type of medium. It is also imperative that the expression of this idea is original. Originality is most recognized through a modicum of creativity in the manner in which the idea has been expressed. In other words, once a work has been completed and then fixed in some medium through which it can be produced, such as the hard drive of a computer, paper or the cloud, and the work can be classified as original, it can then be copyrighted.…
