Why We Should Not Have Strict Dress Codes In Schools

Students should not be limited to what they can wear. Everyone has the right to wear what they want anywhere else they go and it should be the same at schools. Students should not have a strict dress code because it does not affect their learning potential, it prevents students from expressing themselves and dress codes are gender bias and the schools should be teaching respect. According to webster, “A dress code is a set of rules, usually written and posted, specifying the required manner of dress at a school, office, club, restaurant, etc.” ("Dress Code." Merriam-Webster. Merriam-Webster. Web. 03 Mar. 2017) The first school dress code law was established in 1969 by the U.S. Supreme Court. The case is known as Tinker vs. Des Moines Independent School District. It involved several high school students who wore black armbands to school because of a protest against the Vietnam War. After this occurred, the court decided that schools may limit student expression. Along with limiting student expression, came dress codes. The students aren't able to express their style, and everyone has their own. Everyone has a certain way they dress, wear their hair, and that's what makes everyone different and unique. With strict dress codes that privilege is taken away. Also, if schools are enforcing strict dress codes students can not keep up with the latest fashions or styles. I know that being in style as a teen is very important. Students should be able to be confident in the outfits they choose to wear, not bashed just because it does not meet the school's
