Why We Should Not Be Tested In Schools

Everyone knows that drug usage is an enormous issue in the United States. According to the New York Times, schools have decided to start testing middle school children. Schools in over 9 states even require that students that try out for school sports are tested for drug usage. Schools should not be testing children as low as a middle school for drug users. This is an invasion of privacy, the students are far too young, the cost is too much, and the statistics for this state, there is a very low chance of any student using drugs to advance their performance. Students simply trying to make a sports team or joining yearbook should not have to have their privacy invaded and should be able to fulfill their goals without the hassle of urinating in a cup. Is this really necessary? According to Newport Academy “Some parents are saying things have gone too far. They believe there are far better ways to keep kids off of drugs than providing mandatory drug test only for the kids involved in activities.” Also, Olympic stars and NFL football players have to get tested for drug usage; is it really necessary for twelve year olds? Why should we now spend five thousand to seven thousand dollars on drug test for all of these innocent kids just trying to join a sports team whenever we have been using the same textbooks since 2007? As reported by The New York Times, not one student that has been tested has used steroids to enhance their skill level. A few have been tested positive for marijuana, but even those cases are rare.
