High school dropout rates are different around the country, depends on laws or how important schooling is. A subject up for debate is the student’s age when leaving school before graduating. Some say the students should be forced to graduate, and some say students should be able to drop out at sixteen. I believe the age should be eighteen unless students need to get a job, because some students need to get employed just to support their family, no matter what age. Also, because the high school dropout’s average income is lower than others and those without a high school diploma struggle later on in life too.
In a letter written to her Grandmother, Marissa sums up why a student might need to drop out. “You know how hard things have been at home...with dad not working, and mom has only been able to find temporary and part-time work.” (lines 6-9) and “...I decided to step up to look for a job to really help out at home. I’m happy to say I found a full-time job at Marcy’s, starting immediately.” (lines 16-17). Marissa shows that her family was struggling, and in this condition she needed to drop out. High school dropout’s income has on average 7,840 dollars less than a student with a diploma (shown in a chart made by U.S. Department of Education). Even if you finish high school you’re making more money on average. This is why students should stay in high school if they there is no good reason to drop
