Why We Should Be Prosecuted For Bullying And Suicide

Individuals should be prosecuted for bullying and cyberbullying based on how it affects the lives of young people, physically and emotionally. Bullying is an ongoing problem that involves one individual repeatedly acting on another individual with the intent to harm whether physically or verbally. Outcomes of bullying can include physical injury, the lowering of one’s self esteem, damaging one’s reputation, and even suicide in severe cases. It is seen frequently in youth and teens but isn’t limited to the young, bullying can happen at any age. Bullying is a crime and those who partake should be punished. When an individual purposely inflicts harm upon another individual it should not go unrecognized by the law, especially in severe cases. The taking of one’s own life because they feel that they lack worth and purpose is awful enough but when those thoughts are inflicted by the individual’s peers it is completely wrong and also avoidable if there is a serious consequence. How a student’s peers view them can be that students biggest stress and focus, as much as a child can be told to not care what others think, it can feel impossible not to. So when a student is bullied to the point of questioning their own self worth they can begin to blame themselves, and when suicide is the outcome of that, those involved should suffer consequences through the law. In the article “Should Cyber Bullying be a Crime?” an argument was included that question if hurting an individual’s feelings should call for jail time, but really it depends on the case because there is a difference between simply upsetting someone and repeatedly making them feel bad about who they are and their entire existence. In that case, if it leads to them either hurting themselves or committing suicide, then yes, it deserves to be treated like the crime that it
