Why We Should Be Allowed To Carry In Schools Essay

Every day silent tragedies come upon us. Tragedies like the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting is when we mourn the twenty innocent children who will never get the chance to grow old and experience life. Not one person deserved to go through the horror of a psychopath storming into a school and pulling that trigger. The open carry law in Texas should be prohibited. Many individuals with a permit to carry weapons claim they will obey the law but this is very misleading. Some people may not think carefully about when is the appropriate time to fire a weapon. Most may also own a weapon but won’t use it for the right reasons. Many unstable individuals may not take into consideration the gun safety that’s required when owning a weapon. It is essential to keep guns out of the hands of the people, mainly college students, most likely to commit violent acts. For instance, Skorton and Altschuler state, “According to the Harvard Injury Control Research Center, 85 percent of attempted suicides using guns are fatal…” (630). In other words, with guns adjacent to individuals and college students, there will be plenty more suicides that will prosper. To illustrate, firearms do not need to be put in the hands of a college student (Skorton and Altschuler 630). Any environment where a gun is at is very risky, especially in a college campus. Firearms are a threat to not only society, but to those who are not psychologically stable as well. In conclusion, the open carry law in Texas should be prohibited.
