As humans, I feel it seems that we are all natural and compulsive liars. Of course, some are more serious than other, but we usually see the lie as “not being that bad.” I think one of the most common reasons to lie is to help ourselves in some way or form. Not only do we mislead others, but we trick ourselves into believing in something that is not true. I believe the motivation we acquire for lying comes down to our self-esteem and self-preservation. We lie in attempt to generate the greatest possible version of ourselves and lie so we don’t have to face the penalty that our other, less-perfected self acquires. We like to lie about our achievements or skills to gain the respect of others, or to hide mistakes that have been made in order
