Got Milked?
For as long as can be remembered, milk has been viewed as a strong, staple, and nutritious part of any healthy diet. Countless campaigns, ads, and slogans put out by either suppliers or big businesses that support these suppliers that ingrained these ideas into the minds of our adults and our youth. It has been viewed this way for decades, since milk bottles were dropped off at your doorstep routinely. Now, researchers has come out with many new studies that prove these commonly known beliefs wrong. In thanks to this new information, the nation can begin to educate themselves on the true effect milk has on our bodies and our everyday lives. The intake of milk leads to an increase of the chances of having certain cancers, has

It contains nutrients that they need to survive. This is in alikeness to how babies need breast milk when they are at that stage, or a formula that has the same nutrients. But at some point babies, grow out of needing that formula. In addition to milk not being made for us to drink in the first place, the condition that the cows are in when they produce the milk, as well as the many additives that are combined into the liquid are negative. As mentioned earlier, cows are commonly pregnant when they are milked. This leads to an increase in estrogen, that we do not need to be consuming. Today, so many hormones and chemicals are added to milk, opposed to the earlier day’s raw milk. Cows are so over milked, and fed to the point of obesity in order to produce more milk. “Nowadays, milking cows are given antibiotics and most are also injected with a genetically engineered form of bovine growth hormone (rBGH). A man-made or synthetic hormone used to artificially increase milk production, rBGH also increases blood levels of the insulin-growth factor 1 (IGF-1) in those who drink it. And higher levels of IGF-1 are linked to several cancers.” (Saveourbones.com.) Chemicals, as in drugs are also found in milk, either by being injected into the cows themselves or by being added into the milk, “every year U.S. inspectors find illegal levels of antibiotics in dairy cows. And that when the U.S. Food and Drug …show more content…
Milk intake has more subtle changes in the body. As previously mentioned, milk contains hormones, one specifically being IG-F. This acts like an inflammatory for humans, while it acts as a rich nutrient for calves. This inflammatory causes acne, and worsens it. This acne can heavily affect those who are affected by it, especially those of whom are teenagers, “Skin conditions like acne can impact teenagers emotionally and socially by affecting their confidence. The survey showed that most teenagers, including those who experience acne (83 percent) and those who do not (72 percent), believe that not having clear skin can make social situations like making friends and dating more difficult.” says Naomi Shaikh, M.D., Pediatrician, East West Pediatrics, (dermascope.com) In contrast to the common belief that milk protects your bones, it does quite the opposite. The calcium in milk actually leads to a calcium deficit, because of the way it interacts, “calcium is an excellent acid neutralizer and the biggest storage of calcium in the body is – you guessed it… in the bones. So the very same calcium that our bones need to stay strong is utilized to neutralize the acidifying effect of milk. Once calcium is pulled out of the bones, it leaves the body via the urine, so that the surprising net result after this is an actual calcium deficit.”

Breastfeeding in America Breastfeeding in America is underutilized due to a couple complex issues, and is portrayed as having benefits over formula when every other scientific experiment compares the naturally occurring event to the manmade alteration. This being said the results should naturally state that by feeding your child formula you are putting them at a higher risk of a wide range of diseases; however the reverse is true research states that you reduce your child’s risk of developing a wide range of diseases by feeding them human milk. This contradicts what Sarah said in the opposing paragraph that our bodies cannot absorb the calcium in milk. Christian Carlson, a chef at Pelican Hill, says that “as a baby it is a necessity because it is high in protein and provides essential nutrients”. The assumption here is that babies need protein and those “essential nutrients” to have good health. He later comments, “helps with growth, building muscle for youth” an assumption in there is that it only helps the youth therefore meaning milk is only good for the young. A factor that Christian considered as “good” is the whitening of teeth.…

First, raw milk has a better natural nutritional value than pasteurized milk. Study has shown that pasteurization, heat treating the milk at relatively high temperature can cause some losses in vitamin A, C, D and several B vitamins especially vitamin B12. Apart from pasteurization destroying nutrient contents in milk, raw milk produced from cow that are more likely to be fed with green pasture in farms are shown to have higher vitamin A, D and calcium content than those commercially fed. Apart from vitamin content loss in pasteurization, heat treating the milk at relatively high temperature can also destroy the natural enzymes in milk, which then lowers the effectiveness of digestion and assimilation of nutrients in milk. For instance, calcium in raw milk are used more efficiently, which can help to form stronger bone in legs and teeth.…

Although many tests have been conducted concluding that these foods are safe, it has been proven that select dairies inject cows with rBGH, recombinant bovine growth hormone, which has the ability to change a cow’s physiology, and resultantly alter it’s milk. This hormone makes cows more susceptible to diseases and infections, which would affect consumers of the product (Gay 37). All around the world, the research of scientists are being taken seriously, and people are beginning to raise their voice and speak their minds. Numerous campaigns and…
