To Crave Horror; A Summary of King’s “Why We Crave Horror Movies” In Stephen King’s “Why We Crave Horror Movies” he explains the internal feelings and movements that cause people to want to watch horror films. Even if these movies are not everyone’s mojo he goes further to explain the general public in a different way. The question is not whether horror movies are well filmed, oriented, or even makes sense, but why, as people, it can be enjoyable to watch. King believed it is because “we’re all mentally ill” in some way, shape or form (King 422). The reason humans desire a taunting film is due to the natural insanity that people as a whole possess, the “fairy tale” life that appears around the viewer after watching, the nasty joys that lives in everyone, and the societal need for a perfect being. King begins his, very blunt, explanation by commenting on the sanity of all of mankind. He stresses that all people are insane to some degree, however, “those of us outside the asylums hide it a little better” (King 422). Is this true though? He further explains that everyone has their own thread of sanity and it is noticed by society, however, when the case gets extreme is when others seem to care. For instance, being afraid of spiders, heights, drowning, being buried alive or even death are all a little insane but commonly accepted and gets forgotten.
