Why do we Crave Horror Films? Why do we crave horror films? Some say it’s to overcome fear, some say to understand fear, others say just for the excitement. Yet, author of the novel Why we Crave Horror Movies, Mr. Stephen King seems to think differently. Mr. King believes that we all love horror movies because of three specific reasons: to prove that we can sit through an entire movie, to reassure ourselves that we are normal, and oddly just because people love seeing others in danger. His allegations are that all we humans are a little insane inside and horror films gives us that chance to indulge in that wild imagination that we have to feel normal. Society has marked it as crazy or “sick” to want someone in such situations “I think that we’re all mentally ill; those of us outside of the asylums only hide it better – and maybe not all that much better, after all.” (209) Thus the excitement of a horror film. Things such of public lynching has been replaced by these films. You are releasing the side of you that has been hidden. Because i’m not a violent person and my heart is to big to hurt someone, I get a release out of watching it happen to others. It helps me to release stress and the excitement distracts my mind away from the stressful things in mylife. Stephen King’s stated “We also go to reestablish our feelings of essential normality; the horror movie is innately conservative, even reactionary”. (King 4) I think what he means when he says this is that we get an fascination of the extremes in horror movies. In the book Mr. Stephen King uses a woman that is melting. He uses her as an example of an ugly girl. Her being an ugly girl would not only make her scarey, but also make us feel better that we look better than that ugly girl.
