King does not have examples on experts to back up his argument. King uses logos; since he uses many logical examples in this article to prove his point. One of the examples that makes a good logical argument is, “When we exhibit emotions of love, loyalty, and kindness, society showers us with positive reinforcement” (King 563). With this topic, it is proving the logic behind what society expects in all of us. It is quoted that, “ The anticivilization emotions do not go away, and they demand periodic exercise” (King 563). He uses these phrases of logical knowledge to convince the reader that we all have a side to us that needs to be exercised by a good thrilling scare. Another method he uses is pathos; since, he brings in the emotion of fear to his readers. He brings many examples that he can try to relate with his readers to convince them of his theory on why we love scary movies. One example King makes his, “Horror movies, like roller coasters, have always been the special province of the young” (562). With this quote being said, King is trying to bring the emotions to the reader when they have experienced the thrill of horror films or roller coaster when they were young. He does not explain at any point about the sanity of individuals. An example that he is purely bias is by the first sentence in this article, “I think that we are all mentally ill: those of us outside the asylums only hide it a little better” (King 561). He also writes about the different types and degrees of insanity in humans. An example is when he explains, “ If we are all insane, then sanity becomes a matter of degree”(King 562). This is where he comes into to talking about how someone 's insanity could be to the higher degree of murderers like Jack the Ripper, or a low degree of talking to one’s self when under stress. King explains in his article that horror movies give the similar excitement as going on a roller coaster. It can be fun feeling these thrilling emotions. When it comes to civilization towards negative actions, their emotions towards this topic is frowned upon. Civilization is focused more on the positive emotions that get applaud for. King backs up his point of civilization by explaining even as an infant you learn these emotions of right and wrong. More than likely if you do something bad they get punished with a spanking, and when doing something good is normally rewarded with something. This teaches the child that doing something positive is the right thing to do. King also includes, even though this is what civilization expects, you
